Ore Energy and Budget Thuis have signed a landmark agreement to deploy 1 GWh of multi-day iron-air energy storage in the Netherlands, starting with a committed 400 MWh phase planned for 2028.
Ore Energy and Budget Thuis have entered into an agreement to deploy 1 GWh of long-duration iron-air energy storage, marking the largest iron-air storage commitment in continental Europe and the first of its kind involving a European energy supplier.
The partnership will begin with a committed 400 MWh phase scheduled for delivery in 2028. Ore Energy’s containerised battery systems use abundant materials — iron, water and air — to store renewable electricity for periods ranging from 24 to 100 hours.
The technology will allow Budget Thuis to store excess wind energy when renewable generation is high and deliver it during extended periods of low production. By shifting clean electricity across multiple days, the system can reduce dependence on gas-fired backup generation, limit exposure to volatile energy prices and provide customers with cleaner, more stable and affordable electricity.
